RIDGECREST, Kern County — Thursday, October 22, 2026. The National Weather Service Hanford office continues a Flood Watch through Thursday evening for a broad part of Kern County and the Mojave Desert, including Indian Wells Valley, Ridgecrest, Inyokern, Mojave, California City, Randsburg, Tehachapi, Kern River Valley and Bakersfield.

The NWS notice, updated at 5:38 a.m. Thursday, warns that thunderstorms repeatedly moving over the same areas may cause flash flooding. Rainwater could overwhelm drainage systems, flood normally dry washes and low crossings, and cover roads. The watch runs until 8 p.m. PDT October 22 according to its NWS validity timestamp, unless replaced or extended.

EVENING WEATHER UPDATE · October 22, 2026

The 2:07 p.m. NWS Hanford confirmation retained a Kern County Flood Watch until 8 p.m. Thursday, including the Indian Wells Valley and Ridgecrest. This does not confirm flooding or closure on Highway 58; check Caltrans for any recorded road restriction. Official NWS bulletin · Check live road restrictions.

Highway 58 and the Borel burn scar

Forecasters specifically urged caution on Highway 58 between mile markers 101 and 103 and around the Borel wildfire burn scar. Recently burned hillsides can produce fast runoff and debris movements when rain falls hard. This caution does not establish that Highway 58 is closed. Check Caltrans QuickMap for any current officially recorded closure or restriction.

What was updated this afternoon?

A separate and more specific NWS Flood Advisory was issued at 12:41 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. for northeastern Kern County, naming Inyokern, China Lake, Walker Pass, Indian Wells Canyon and Onyx. It highlighted possible water on Highways 14, 178 and 395. See the original Inyokern News advisory report for the localized warning.

Flood Watch is not a Flash Flood Warning

A watch means atmospheric and ground conditions support possible flooding; a warning signals an immediate or imminent threat in a specific area. The active watch itself is not a claim of property damage or flash flooding on every street. As local alerts evolve, residents can verify them with NWS Hanford and the official county emergency services.

Electricity and cell service

This flood watch does not verify that electricity or mobile networks failed in Ridgecrest. Separately, Searles Valley News is tracking an outage affecting a Trona-area address, where a resident still reported no power at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday. The Trona case should not be extrapolated to Ridgecrest or used as evidence that rain caused the electrical failure.
